Little Bedtime Prayers for Children

Parents can encourage children to say their own spontaneous prayers, which come from the heart, at bedtime.

However, if children need a little more encouragement about what to say, here are six little bedtime prayers which have been passed down for generations:

Dear God, Before I shut my eyes up tight, I want to say to you, “Good night.” And thank you for this happy day, so full of laughter, joy and play.

Thank you for the world so sweet; Thank you for the food we eat; Thank you for the birds that sing; Thank you, God, for everything.

All this day, thy love has led me, And I thank thee for my care; Thou has fed me, clothed me, warmed me. Listen to my evening prayer!

Lord, I thank you for this day. For my work and my play. Keep me sleeping good and tight. And help to make tomorrow bright.

For this new morning with its light, For rest and shelter of the night, For health and food, for home and friends, For everything that goodness sends, We thank thee, Heavenly Father.

For flowers that bloom about our feet, For tender grass so fresh and sweet, For song of bird and hum of bee, For all things fair we hear or see, Father, We thank thee.
